Mary Cometh

Mary comes tomorrow and this is a very good thing. It also means surgery is getting very close. Sunday we venture to Worcester together, but I get ahead of myself. I will be very happy to see Mary tomorrow.

Today I told Bennett that I am going to the hospital. She wanted to know why and I told her I was getting a big owie taken out of my belly. She wanted to know what the owie was called so I told her cancer. You should have seen her face when she asked "what is cancer?" She looked like she had just eaten something rotten. All she wanted to know was I going to get better. And I said yes. It broke my heart, because really who knows? But as Pat says yes is the only answer because that is what we are going for. That's right. She is swinging some mighty swords these days and I love her for it.

I told B that we could talk on the phone and she said that she wanted to be able to talk over the computer- we've been Skyping a bit lately, so a regular phone will not do for this girl. Then she found out she is going to go to her school and start swimming and ballet and she got excited and stopped worrying about me. I have to say it just about broke my heart, but she is in such good hands and has so many people who love her, I really don't have to worry. Mostly it's my heart that I worry about. I am going to miss her.

Happy New Year to you all!

  2. My mother in law was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1970's. She had a double mastectomy, a historectomy, and all the lympth nodes under her arms removed. As I understand it was was avery aggressive attack on her cancer and took a very long time to recover from. She had 6 children and told me that they were the reason she survived. She explained how all she thoughgt about was her children and being their for them. She is 86 years old and a tough shit with another decade left in her for sure. An inspiration. She only wore her bra inserts on holidays. One day, when my son Kyle was about 13, he heard my husband and I talking about her proceedures ( our kids neer knew about her cancer), Kyle slapped his hand to his head and declared "thank God...I though I was crazy...I couldn't figure out why some days Grandma had boobs and at other times she didn't!" What a gift to just be Grandma. I wish the same for you.

  5. Happy New Year, Ruth! Well, Mary is probably cameth by now. I look forward to greeting her real soon. What a great sister you have (more than one, I know). And, the surgery _is_ going to make you better; you just have to ride valiantly through the forest of it, first. Pat will be riding next to you, swinging her mighty swords, no doubt about it.

You and Pat are such excellent parents, that Bennett has room to get excited and not worry. You will miss each other next week, but then you will return home and have an incision-respectful lovefest with her and be in the midst of your glorious family for a well-supported recovery.

I expect you will go into this surgery the way you go into all Ruth van Erp projects -- owning it. Only with this one, you have oodles and oodles of support and attention and love behind you, the whole time you are doing it.

    Lots of love, as always,
    See you soon,
    Ruth
